On sideshift backhoe loaders the carriage is clamped to the rear chassis rails by hydraulic clamps during work. The clamp bodies, pistons and mounting plates apply force to the shoes that grip the rails. When the operator selects sideshift, the clamps release, the carriage slides and is then clamped again. A worn clamp shoe or a leaking piston lets the carriage slip while digging. The clamp hoses and unions are checked for leaks. The clamp system pressure must be at the maker's value, as low pressure lets the carriage slip. The surfaces between the clamp shoes and rails are kept clean and free of grease.
