The kingpost (swing tower) connects the backhoe boom to the carriage and is the joint around which the boom swings left and right. It is attached to the carriage by the upper and lower swing pins and to the boom by the boom foot pin, and the swing rams act on it. Digging forces and swing moments pass straight through the kingpost, so worn pin eyes, cracked welds or a distorted body make the boom wobble and lose precision. The swing pin nipples are greased every day. The kingpost pin eyes are measured, as oval eyes leave play even with new pins and bushes. Fine cracks at the welds show as rust marks under the paint, so the kingpost is inspected after cleaning.
