The backhoe carriage connects the swing tower of the backhoe to the rear of the chassis. On sideshift machines the carriage slides left and right on rails at the rear of the chassis, letting the operator dig close to a wall or the edge of an obstacle. During work the carriage is clamped to the rails by hydraulic locks. Since all the digging forces pass through it, its body must be free of cracks, its clamping faces of wear and its slides of play. The carriage slide pads and clamp shoes are checked during routine servicing, and the rail grease passages are kept clear, as dry rails wear the pads quickly.
