Ground type decides the choice of tips: tips with a thick wear zone for sandy and abrasive ground, sharp forged tips that take impact better for hard and stony ground. When a tip is changed, the adaptor nose is measured too, as a new tip on a worn adaptor sits loose, overloads the retaining pin and can fall off.
