Thrust washers carry the axial loads of rotating or swinging parts and stop the parts rubbing directly against each other. They are used in the backhoe swing joint, the gearbox, the differential and the axle hubs. When a thrust washer wears, axial play increases: in the swing joint the boom starts to wobble, and in the gearbox and differential gear noise and incorrect meshing appear.

Fitting

Before fitting the washer, clean the seating faces and remove burrs and old seal remains. Fit the washer the right way round and tighten the joint to the specified torque. Copper and aluminium sealing washers that have been removed are not reused; new ones are fitted.
