Differential adjusting nut 450/10403 is an aftermarket part for the JCB machines.
The differential adjusting (side) nut holds the outer races of the differential side bearings in the casing and, when turned, sets both the bearing preload and the backlash between the crown wheel and pinion. If the nut's thread or locking teeth are damaged, the setting cannot be held: the differential moves axially, the backlash changes and the crown wheel and pinion become noisy. The adjusting nuts are therefore always checked during a differential or crown wheel repair.

Compatibility
According to sources, 450/10403 is the toothed adjusting nut on the side of the JCB axle differential. Other parts are in Reduction gears.
Fitting
The nut comes new. Lubricate its thread with clean axle oil when fitting, then set the bearing preload and backlash by measurement to the values in the service manual and lock the nut with its lock plate or pin. Check the contact pattern with marking compound and fill the axle with the specified oil. Turn the adjusting nuts on both sides in step to centre the crown wheel, since adjusting one side only overloads one of the bearings. After adjustment, check the crown wheel run-out with a dial gauge.
