This ring seals pressurised oil between a rotating transmission shaft and the housing or clutch drum, and thanks to these rings oil reaches the clutch packs and transmission pump circuits without losing pressure. A worn ring causes internal leakage, low clutch pressure and slipping gears. Internal leakage in a transmission usually shows first with hot oil: gears that engage normally when cold start to engage late or slip as the machine warms up. This is a sign that the rings in the clutch pack circuits need checking, and when they are changed the shaft grooves are also inspected for burrs and wear.
