A ring is defined by inside diameter, cross-section and material, and even rings that look alike can differ in hardness or material. In hydraulic and fuel systems a ring of the wrong material swells or cracks, and in high-pressure joints a size mismatch lets the ring extrude from its groove. The ring is therefore chosen by part number.

Fitting
On assembly, clean the groove and mating face, wet the ring with the working fluid or suitable grease and seat it without twisting. Protect the ring as it passes sharp edges and threads, tighten the joint to the specified torque and check for leaks under pressure. Spare rings are stored somewhere cool and dark, away from sunlight and ozone, since rubber left in the light cracks at the surface and starts leaking soon after fitting. Before fitting, inspect the ring for cracks, cuts and moulding flash.
