Bonded seal 3/8" 1406/0015 JCB, aftermarket

Bonded seal 3/8" 1406/0015 is an aftermarket part for the JCB machines. According to the product card, the washer is for a 3/8 inch connection.

A bonded seal is a steel washer with a rubber sealing ring vulcanised into its bore. It goes under hydraulic unions, plugs and banjo fittings: when the fitting is tightened the rubber ring is squeezed and stops oil escaping along the thread, while the steel washer carries the clamping force. It needs less torque than a copper washer and tolerates small surface damage better.

Fitting

The washer is chosen by the thread size of the fitting (for example 3/8 BSP). Its rubber part takes a permanent set once tightened, so a new washer is fitted every time the joint is taken apart. Clean the faces, centre the washer and tighten the fitting to the specified torque, since overtightening cuts the rubber and causes a leak. Check the joint once the system is pressurised.
