Transmission and axle oil lubricates gears, bearings and synchronisers, removes heat and carries away wear particles. On machines this oil is often not only a lubricant but also a working fluid: in powershift transmissions the clutches are applied by oil pressure, and in oil-immersed brakes the plates run in oil. The oil's friction properties must therefore let the clutches and brakes work without slipping or judder. The wrong oil can cause clutch slip, brake squeal and overheating. When the oil is changed, the unit's breather is checked as well, since a blocked breather raises the pressure of the warm oil and forces it out past the seals.

Use

Drain the oil on level ground, preferably while warm. Clean the plugs and refit them with new seals, and fill the unit to the specified level. After a short period of work, check the level and for leaks again.
