An excavator's main pump is the most expensive hydraulic part, turning engine power into hydraulic power, so the cause of failure is always investigated before it is replaced. Scoring on the pistons, cylinder block and valve plate points to dirty oil, while broken pistons point to cavitation or pressure overload. Before fitting the new pump, clean the tank, renew the oil and all filters and fill the pump case with clean oil. Check the regulator settings with a gauge against the service data. The pump is heavy and is fitted with a lift, without misalignment, onto the hub of the flywheel coupling. The pump is chosen by part number and model code, and its regulator type, rotation and flange are compared with the old pump. Keep the ports capped until fitting.

Fitting

Before changing a pump or motor, drain and clean the hydraulic tank and renew the suction strainer and filters. Label and remove the hoses and cap the ports. Fit the new unit with the shaft and coupling cleaned and the splines greased as appropriate, renew the flange seals and tighten the bolts evenly to the specified torque. Before the first start, fill the unit case with clean oil; run the engine at idle to bleed the system and then check the pressures with a gauge.
