The fuel tank cap closes the filler neck, stopping fuel splashing out and dust, water and foreign objects getting into the tank. Many caps contain a vent valve that lets air into the tank as fuel is used but keeps dust and water out. A cap with a blocked vent creates a vacuum in the tank, strains the lift pump and makes the engine lose power. Locking caps protect against fuel theft. A hardened seal or a lost cap lets dirt into the tank, which is a serious threat to the injection pump and injectors. If the cap is lost, the filler neck is never left open even briefly; it is covered with a clean blank until a proper cap is fitted. Rain and dust entering an open neck can block the fuel filters within hours and damage the injection system. If the cap has a chain or tether, check that it is intact too. Along with the cap, check the filler neck threads or bayonet lugs.

Fitting
