Fuel lift pump MP10325 is an aftermarket part for the Perkins-engined JCB machines.

The fuel lift (transfer) pump draws fuel from the tank, passes it through the filters and delivers it to the injection pump at sufficient pressure. A mechanical pump is driven from the camshaft by a pushrod or cam and usually has a hand-priming lever, used to bleed the system after filter changes. When the lift pump weakens, the injection pump does not get enough fuel: the engine loses power under load, starts badly or stops after starting. As the injection pump is lubricated by fuel, poor supply shortens its life too. If the pump's diaphragm or valves fail, fuel can leak outside or into the engine oil, and an engine oil level that rises by itself is a dangerous sign of this fault. The lift pump pressure is easy to measure with a low-pressure gauge connected at the injection pump inlet. If the reading is below the manual value, check the filters and suction line first, then the pump itself. This order avoids replacing a good pump for nothing.

Fitting

Before the change, shut off or clamp the fuel lines and clean around the pump. On a mechanical pump, turn the engine so the cam is at its lowest point, so the new pump seats without force. Fit the pump with a new gasket, tighten the bolts to the specified torque and connect the hoses observing the inlet and outlet. Then bleed the system with the hand primer or by switching on the ignition, run the engine and check for leaks and the engine oil level. Watch the engine oil level in the first days of work.
