The filtration fineness and capacity of a fuel filter are matched to the engine, so the filter is chosen by part number. A filter that looks the same but has a different fineness may not protect the engine adequately. Its thread and seal diameter must match the filter head, since an unsuitable filter can draw in air and make the engine hard to start. Water and sediment at the bottom of the fuel tank shorten filter life, so drain the tank sediment regularly.

Fitting

Before the change, stop the engine and clean around the filter. Remove the old filter and wipe the seal face of the filter head. Lightly lubricate the new filter's seal with clean fuel, screw the filter on by hand and, once the seal touches, tighten it by the amount the maker specifies; overtightening with a wrench crushes the seal and makes removal hard. Then bleed the fuel system with the hand primer or the method in the manual, start the engine and check for leaks. Clean hands and tools matter when changing a fuel filter, since dirt on the filter head can reach the clean side of the new filter. Do not overtighten the bleed screw on the filter head.
