Suction strainers are usually a washable wire-mesh type fitted inside the hydraulic tank on the pump suction line, stopping coarse particles reaching the pump. If the strainer clogs, the pump struggles to draw oil, a cavitation whine develops and the pump wears quickly. The strainer is removed and checked at hydraulic oil changes, and a distorted or torn strainer is replaced. When fitting it, check its thread and O-ring, since a leak in the suction line makes the pump draw in air. The strainer comes new.
