Air filter, outer 346-6687 CAT, aftermarket, option 2

For the Caterpillar backhoe loaders and loaders: air filter, outer 346-6687, an aftermarket part. This element is the outer (primary) element of a two-stage air filter.

The air filter traps dust and sand in the air drawn in by the engine, protecting the cylinders, pistons and turbocharger compressor from wear. Construction machines work in dusty conditions, so the air filter is one of the most frequently serviced parts. In two-stage systems the outer (primary) element catches most of the dust, while the inner (safety) element protects the engine if the primary is damaged or while it is being changed. A clogged filter starves the engine of air, causing loss of power, black smoke and higher fuel use. When the outer element is changed, check that the inner one is in place and clean; the inner element is renewed at its service interval or when dirty.

Fitting

Before the change, stop the engine and clean the outside of the filter housing so no dust falls into the intake side when it is opened. Remove the old element carefully and wipe the inside of the housing and the seal face with a damp cloth; never blow compressed air into the clean side of the housing. Fit the new element fully home and close the cover clips. The dust valve, where fitted, must be intact and pointing down.
