Circlips differ in diameter, thickness, type (external or internal) and lug shape. When removed, a circlip can lose its tension and no longer sits as tightly in its groove, so in gearboxes, axles and pin joints removed circlips are usually renewed. The circlip is chosen by part number to suit the groove. The groove itself is checked too, as even a new circlip will not stay in a worn or burred groove.
