Piston ring set 320/09299 JCB Dieselmax standard, aftermarket

Piston ring set 320/09299, standard is an aftermarket part for the JCB Dieselmax 444 engine.

The rings rely on the hone pattern on the bore: it holds oil and helps the rings bed in. In a glazed bore new rings never bed in and the engine keeps burning oil. So when rings are changed the bore is at least lightly honed, and the big-end bearings are checked too. After a ring change, watch the oil consumption and exhaust smoke during the first working hours. The top face of the compression rings is marked; a ring fitted upside down pumps oil into the combustion chamber.

Fitting

Before fitting, measure the ring end gap in the bore with a feeler gauge. Fit the rings with ring pliers, TOP mark up, and stagger the gaps. Clean the bore after honing and run the engine in at light load.
