Cam follower (tappet) 320/03524 is an aftermarket part for the JCB Dieselmax 444 engine.
The tappet slides on the camshaft lobe and passes its movement to the pushrod. Its base is hardened; a worn or pitted base damages the lobe and reduces valve lift. Tappet wear usually comes from neglected oil changes or from running a new camshaft with old tappets. The tappet base is slightly domed so the tappet rotates, which helps the base wear evenly. Side wear or scoring on the body means the bore in the block must be checked too. The tappets work in the block above the camshaft and are lubricated by engine oil. Tappets are replaced as a set. The tappet is made of steel.

Compatibility
The part is listed for JCB 3CX and 4CX backhoe loaders. The catalogue also has the genuine version of this part. Other parts are in JCB Dieselmax engine.
Fitting
If old tappets are reused, each goes back in its own bore. Set the valve clearances after assembly. Oil must stay clean in the first hours after a camshaft and tappet change, so the first oil change can be brought forward. Keep the tappets in order on a clean, dry surface.
