Starter motor 24 V RE504245 is an OEM part for the John Deere machines. The card also lists RE506103.
24 V starters are used on machines with large engines such as excavators, with two batteries connected in series to give 24 V. A 24 V system needs less current for the same power, so cables and contacts are loaded less. The two batteries should be at a similar state of charge, since a weak battery loads the other and makes the starter crank slowly. Check both batteries and clean the terminals when the starter is changed. The starter is chosen by voltage, power and pinion for the machines listed on the card.

Compatibility
According to the product card, this is a 24 V starter for John Deere machines; the card gives the numbers RE504245, RE506103, DSN2016 and 2280009151. Other parts are in Starter motors.
Fitting
Before removing the starter, disconnect the battery negative so the permanent positive feed on the starter cable cannot short. Label and remove the cables, then undo the mounting bolts. Fit the new starter with its flange and the seat in the flywheel housing cleaned, and tighten the bolts to the specified torque. Connect the main and control cables clean and tight, since a loose connection heats up and makes the starter turn weakly. After reconnecting the battery, start the engine and check that the starter works quietly and without delay.
