Water pump RE505980 Hidromek/JD, aftermarket

Water pump RE505980 is an aftermarket part for the Hidromek and John Deere machines.

Pump life depends most on coolant quality: in systems run on water or with old antifreeze, scale and corrosion wear the impeller and score the seal faces. An over-tight belt also ruins the pump bearing early. Belt tension is therefore kept at the service value and the antifreeze is changed at the maker's recommended intervals. A few drops from the weep hole at first can be normal, but a steady leak means the pump needs replacing.

Fitting

Before the change, let the engine cool and drain the coolant into a suitable container. Slacken and remove the belt and undo the pump bolts. Clean the mating faces, fit the new pump with a new gasket or O-ring and tighten the bolts in a cross pattern to the specified torque. Refit the belt and set its tension, fill the system with the correct antifreeze and bleed it. Run the engine and check for leaks and temperature. Recheck the belt tension after the first run.
