The fan blade pulls or pushes air through the radiator pack, cooling the coolant, oil and charge air. Its number of blades, diameter and pitch are set for the engine and cooling pack, and a different fan reduces airflow or wastes power. A cracked, broken or bent fan runs out of balance, causes vibration and strains the water pump bearing, and a piece breaking off can puncture the radiator. A damaged fan is therefore replaced, not repaired. The fan is carried and stored so that its balance is not disturbed.

Fitting

Before the change, stop the engine and remove the key. Take off the relevant part of the shroud, undo the bolts and remove the fan. Fit the new fan the right way round (by the curve of the blades relative to the engine) and tighten the bolts in a cross pattern to the specified torque. Turn the fan by hand to make sure it clears the shroud, then run the engine and confirm there is no vibration. The gap between the blade tips and the shroud must be even.
