Washers are chosen by part number so that the inside and outside diameters and thickness match the old one, since thickness directly affects settings and clearances. Spring and lock washers are renewed after removal. A washer is a part where dimensional accuracy matters: even a few tenths of a millimetre change the setting.

Fitting

On assembly, clean and oil the washer and locate any tab or pin in its seat. After assembly, measure the end float to the service manual. When fitting, check the washer for burrs, dents and scoring, since a damaged face also wears the side of the gear or bearing. If a thrust washer has oil grooves, fit it with the grooves facing the gear. Washers in the same assembly can differ in thickness, so note their positions and order when dismantling.
