For the Caterpillar backhoe loaders: track rod 229-2949, an aftermarket part.
The track rod is checked on level ground with the engine running by turning the steering slightly each way: visible play or a knocking sound at the ball joint shows wear. If the ball joint boots are torn, dust and water get in and ruin the joint quickly. The grease nipples on the rod ends, where fitted, are greased at the service interval.

Compatibility
According to the product card, Caterpillar 229-2949 is a track rod; cross numbers: 130-3012. Fit is confirmed by the axle or transmission type. Other parts are in Carraro.
Fitting
Before removing the old rod, mark the position of the adjusting nuts. Separate the ball joint tapers with a proper splitter, since hammering can damage the knuckle bore. When fitting the new rod the tapers must be clean and dry, the nuts tightened to the specified torque and new split pins fitted. After fitting, turn the steering to full lock both ways and check that the rod fouls nothing. The track rod comes new, and its ball joint boots and nuts are checked before fitting. When choosing a rod, compare it with the old one for length, thread direction and ball joint tapers, since a rod of a different length can make it impossible to set the toe-in. A bent rod is replaced, not straightened, because straightened steel is weakened and can bend again under load. Watch tyre wear in the first weeks after the change.
