For the JCB 3CX and 4CX backhoe loaders: steering coupling 331/36009, a genuine JCB part.

The coupling is chosen by part number for the steering column and steering unit type, as its spline count and diameter must suit both shafts. When it is changed, the splines on both shafts are checked, since a worn shaft will give play with a new coupling too. For safety, steering parts are only replaced with parts of the correct number. The coupling pinch bolts are checked for tightness at every major service.

Fitting

Before the change, set the wheels straight and stop the machine safely. Undo the joint between the column and steering unit and remove the coupling. Seat the new coupling on the splines without force, tighten the pinch bolts to the specified torque and lock them. After assembly, turn the steering fully both ways to check for play or binding. After fitting, the part is checked again after a few hours of work.
