Brake pistons and their housings vary with the axle, the size of the brake pack and the design of the return mechanism. Even within one axle family there are old and new type pistons that work with different springs, guides or setting parts. The piston is therefore chosen by part number and checked against the axle serial number. When it is replaced, the seals, return springs and guides are renewed, and the piston bore is cleaned and checked for burrs. The O-rings and seals used with the piston must be made of a material that suits the fluid used in the brake system. When the axle oil is changed, its colour is noted too, as milky or thin oil can point to brake fluid getting past the piston seals.

Fitting

Before removing the piston, drain the axle oil and disconnect the brake line. Lubricate the new seals with clean axle oil and fit the piston without letting it tilt in its bore. After assembly, fill the axle with oil, bleed the brakes and test them.
