Brake master cylinder 71702136 is an aftermarket part for the Steyr tractors.

The brake master cylinder turns the force the operator applies to the pedal into fluid pressure and sends it through the brake lines to the brake pistons. When the pedal is pressed, the cylinder piston moves forward, the main cup seal closes the feed port and pushes fluid into the line; when the pedal is released, a spring returns the piston and fluid refills from the reservoir. Worn internal seals make the pedal sink slowly, delay braking or make one side brake more weakly. Leaks from the body or at the pedal end also show that the cylinder needs replacing. The pedal latch and the pedal return springs are checked too, as a sticking pedal will stop a new cylinder from returning fully as well.

Fitting

Before removing the cylinder, park the machine on level ground and chock the wheels. Catch the fluid in a container when disconnecting the lines and protect the ports from dirt. After fitting the new cylinder, set the pedal free play, bleed the system and test the brakes at low speed before work.
