Brake cylinder 542/544 MST, aftermarket

Brake cylinder 542/544 is an aftermarket part for the MST backhoe loaders. The product card name gives the MST 542 and 544 models.

The life of a brake cylinder depends largely on the condition of the fluid. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, and wet fluid causes corrosion in the cylinder, sticking pistons and fast seal wear. In mineral oil systems, dirty or wrong oil has the same effect. When a cylinder is replaced, the fluid is therefore renewed, the reservoir cleaned and the old fluid fully drained from the lines. After any brake repair, the fluid level and pedal height are watched for a few days; a falling level or a pedal that sinks again shows that a leak remains elsewhere. Cylinders for the left and right sides of one axle are often renewed together so that the braking force stays equal on both sides.

Fitting

Before replacing the cylinder, park the machine on level ground and chock the wheels. Catch the fluid in a container when undoing the unions and plug the open ends. After fitting, bleed the system, check for leaks and test the brakes at low speed.
