After assembly the section is extended and retracted through its full stroke several times. The sliding surfaces are kept clean and free of packed soil. When the section is replaced, the extension ram and hoses are checked for leaks and chafing. The clearance between the slide pads is measured with the section fully extended and adjusted with shims if needed: too much clearance causes knocking while digging, too little causes binding.
