The diaphragm in a breaker's accumulator is a rubber membrane separating the nitrogen from the hydraulic oil. The accumulator absorbs the pressure surges created on every piston cycle and supplies the instant volume of oil needed for the blow. If the diaphragm tears, nitrogen gets into the oil, impact force drops, the hoses vibrate violently and the pump and valves can be damaged. When the diaphragm is replaced, the accumulator cover seal and charging valve are checked too.
