Tips are chosen by the adaptor system and size: even within one machine make there are tips of different series and weight classes, and each fits only its own adaptor. There are different types for different conditions: standard tips for soil and sand, and heavy-duty and rock tips with a thicker wear zone for stony and hard ground. Cast tips are more economical, while forged tips stand up better to impact. Ground type decides the choice of tips: tips with a thick wear zone for sandy and abrasive ground, sharp forged tips that take impact better for hard and stony ground. When a tip is changed, the adaptor nose is measured too, as a new tip on a worn adaptor sits loose, overloads the retaining pin and can fall off.

Fitting
